What an incredible champion of nature. I have long been interested in the "rewild your lawn" movement but I didn't know there were people like Benjamin who actually help people achieve this. Thank you for bringing him to our attention, Jeanne!
Interesting career change! I like the photos from Benjamin's portfolio section of his website. Those examples seem so much more lively than the standard green cut lawn with no distinguishing features.
Thank you for highlighting native plant gardeners! We have a vibrant Native Plant Society in Georgia. I think many states do. I am a big fan of Doug Tallamy, wild spaces, and natural spaces!
Have you noticed how all the Champions have experienced nature daily in one way or another as children. Our children need to be moved from in front of the computer and tv screens into the real natural world. The only way to save our magnificent Earth.
I'm in Athens, Georgia. Fortunately, both Janisse and Raven make forays to my community fairly regularly. It's always fun to hear Janisse speak and read poetry. Raven delivered a commissioned painting of my Quercus albus tree and posed with the painting while holding it beneath its branches. Connections to like-minded people are always fun. I enjoyed your presentation on Zoom recently. Thank you.
Thanks for another great and important post. I so love and respect what he's doing, and my wife is full-on native gardener here in Wisconsin. Around these parts it's referred to as Prairie restoration and it is slowly becoming a thing though we're certainly not in suburbia where it looks different for certain. We have occasionally seen renegades in out-of-town newer developments where couragious trailblazers buck the system. I'm sending a link for this post to my wife because per usual good works happening right under our nose are always inspiring.
I was scrolling along on notes, and stopped when I saw the photo, which I immediately recognized as a Vogt! :) I’ve been reading/following his work for a few years. Love what he does. Thanks for this interview--it was great!
“Unlawn America, reprairie suburbia, and rethink pretty.”

A thousand yesses.

We're practically Neighbors, Jeanne! I used to live right on the border of SC and GA in Elberton, near Calhoun Falls.

He's such a clear voice, among others. Thanks for recognizing him!
Yes! How awesome!
